More information
Pfc Robert A. Hill gradudated from Emmerich Manual Training High School and worked for the Hulskamp Saw Works. He enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 10 April 1943.
He had been in combat more than ten months.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on 17 April 1944. Entering Ascherleben ahead of their battalion, Pfc Hill and three other members of his motorized combat patrol were subjected to intense small arms fire from German forces in the buildings. They engaged twelve of the enemy, who were in defensive positions and killed or wounded all of them.
Proceeding further in to the town, the four men continued their reconnaissance and were able to reduce the amount of sniper fire coming for the buildings. Following a skirmish, the men left their vehicles to engage several fanatical Germans holding out on one of the houses.
After the battle, Pfc Hill and his companions killed several of the enemy and captured several more. While waiting for others of their party to join them, they were attacked by groups of SS men and in the ensuing struggle, Pfc Hill was fatally wounded.
