More information
James E. Gabbert joined the Regular Army at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on 23 August 1940.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal twice. The citation of the first medal cited: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress 9 July 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] James E. Gabbert (ASN: 15054971), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, while temporarily attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. While under heavy enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Gabbert left his shelter, crawled to a forward position, and removed a seriously wounded man to a place of comparative safety where he administered necessary medical treatment. His courage under fire and cool manner in which he handled himself resulted in saving of this man's life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
