More information

Pfc Fred A. Vermillion attended Oelwein High School and was employed by the Levin Auto Parts and the Rock Island Railroad Company.
He entered the service in March of 1943 and received the greater part of his training at Camp Butner, North Carolina and Camp Pickett, West Virginia. He was sent overseas and fought with the Ninth Army in the European Area.

He was wounded in Belgium and confined to 2 hospitals in England. For these wounds he was awarded the Purple Heart.

After recovering from his injuries he was sent back to the front where he made the supreme sacrifice.
He was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.

His brother, Pvt. William H. Vermillion was also killed during the war and is interred next to him at Plot A, Row 35, Grave 52.
