While leading a patrol out of the woods into a clearing, Sgt Burdette was wounded by enemy automatic small arms fire. He ordered the members of the patrol to abandon him, which they did. Later the same day and again the next morning, patrols thoroughly searched the area but no trace of Sgt Burdette could be found.His remains were recovered in a shallow grave on 28 March 1945 in Udenbreth, Germany.
