Capt. Ferguson graduated from Washington State College.

He volunteered for the U.S. Army Reserve on 1 October 1941.

He volunteered to lead a patrol on a mission to capture an enemy machine gun nest in the Hürtgen Forest, near Losheimergraben, Germany on 16 November 1944. When within thirty yards of their objective, and while attempting to rescue a fellow officer, he was wounded by enemy machine gun fire. A member of the patrol later searched the area where he had seen Capt Ferguson fall, but could find no trace of him.
