Pfc. Herbert J. Klinger enlisted on 13 October 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He attended grammar school and was a musician and artist before he enlisted.

He landed in France in June 1944 and was wounded when he received shrapnel injuries while serving as an Infantry messenger in the Cherbourg Peninsula campaign and has been awarded the Purple Heart. He recuperated at an Army hospital in England.

On 26 August 1945 a Memorial mass was sung in St. Henry’s Church in honour for Herbert. Members of American Legion St. Clair Post No. 694 attended in uniform.
