Pfc Virgil H. Roth worked on his father's farm and as a shipping clerk at a local furniture store while attending school.He was employed as a machinist by the A.C. Spark Plug division of General Motors when he enlisted at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 9 August 1944.
Two of his brothers also served during the war: Kenneth with the U.S. Marines and Roger with the U.S. Navy.
