Pvt Fred E. Hintermeister attended high school for four years and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Camp Dodge Herrold, Iowa on 18 January 1944. He was sent overseas in August 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand Failly, France.
