More information

Pfc Fred J. Zellick graduated from McKeesport High School in 1936 and was an engineer.

He enlisted on 12 July 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Together with his mother, Anna, he envisioned and planned a recreational hall for the 200+ McKeesport soldiers who would need a place of their own upon returning home. These men called Anna Zellick "Mom". The plans for the hall were put on hold when Fritz entered the military in July 1944. Then the plans died with his death in Germany. After a mourning period, Anna resurrected the plans and continued her son's dream of building the hall for "her boys" and in honor of her son's life. The hall, which was built with the help of a citizens' committee, contained a library, a game room, along with a grille, and was dedicated on 21 October 1945. It continues to serve the residents of McKeesport.
