William R. Giles enlisted in Hoquiam, Washington on 12 January 1943 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He resigned from this position in order to reenlist for active duty in the U.S. Army Reserve on 10 July 1943.Pvt. Giles was killed while leading a litter squad through a minefield in order to evacuate wounded personnel. Three teller mines and a S mine exploded and killed him instantly.
