1st Lt. Daniel J. Sullivan graduated from North Quincy High School and attended Boston University College of Business Administration where he received his degree in Business Science in May 1942.

He was sent overseas with the 43rd Infantry Division in 1942 and saw service in New Ezaland, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and on Munda, New Georgia where he was wounded in July 1943. He was severly cut in the legs and arm in a hand-to-hand encounter with two Japanese soldiers. He was evacuated to the United States in September 1943 and hospitalized at the O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Due to his wounds, he was on limited service at Camp Fannin, Texas until July 1944.

In September 1944 he returned to combat duty in the European Theatre where he saw action in the Hürtgen Forest and in Luxembourg.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
