Pfc John W. Andrews attended Technical High School for three years and was a clerk before he joined the National Guard in Scranton, Pennsylvania on 17 February 1941.

His brother-in-law, Clayton P. Boorem, was lost in the sinking of the USS Maddox and is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.
