More information
A graduate of Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, Pvt Charles A. Strudeman was a student at the University of Illinois when he was inducted for service in March of 1942. His fiancee received a letter from him written on Christmas in which he said he had attended mass and also that he had returned to the front after 48 leave in Paris.Pfc Strudeman died in St.Vith/Marche, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. A letter from a member of his platoon tells of the men being in the Ardennes Forest near Marche, Belgium. On 26th December 1944, around 2AM: "We had taken heavy cannon fire from German tanks when Charles was injured. His injuries were so severe that he could not move or be moved. The cold was very extreme that night and my guess that he either died from the cold or the loss of blood".
