Pvt Walter J. Swain attended Southeastern High School fot 2 years and was employed by Briggs Manufacturing before he enlisted in June 1944 and was overseas for only a month when he was killed.

His daughter Sharon was only six weeks old.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Fosse, Belgium.
