Pvt Clyde L. Matthews was selected for the A.S.T.P. program for which he was sent to John Hopkins University. When the program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was a member of a combat patrol which was attacked by the enemy in the neighborhood of Lindern, Germany, according to a message received by his parents by the War Department. During the battle he disappeared and he was reported as missing in action.
