More information
This story was told by Sgt. John Godlewskin who was with George Pollard when he was killed: "American army's were on the move at this time of the war. We rode on 6X6's until we met resistance then we would leave the 6X6's and fight our way till we got until we got to the other end of the town or city where we would pick up the 6 x 6's.I have no idea what the name of this town or village was but as we approached the corners there was a lonely house which our platoon was ordered to enter. It wasn't 10-15 minutes when Lt Thurrel yelled to evacuate the house and pointed to run across the road into the wooded lot. Later we found out became a tank positioning itself to begin shelling us.
George Pollard was in the doorway and I was right behind him. Again Lt. Thurrel ordered us to move it out. George started to run with me right behind him halfway across the road George got hit, I think by rifle fire. I bent down to assist him and Lt. Thurrel yelled to keep moving and proceeded into the wooded lot. The tank began to shell us in the woods. Three of us only survived from our squad the others were wounded. Later on they rejoined our platoon. I can't remember where we went from here except we proceeded to go for the Elbe River in Wittenberg where we met the Russians."
