1st Lt Richard W. Shupe graduated from Central High School in 1938 where he served as President of the Hi-Y club and sang bass with the choir. He attended Central Michigan University for 2 years and sang with the college's A Capella choir. He was a clerk before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Detroit, Michigan on 5 February 1942.
