S/Sgt Earl B. Lewis' mother died in 1918 and he resided with his grandparents George and Susan Kanouse.

He attended Nesquehoning High School and worked in the Nesquehoning mines before he enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 8 December 1942. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

His last letter dated 10 November 1944 said he was in the Netherlands but had not yet been in action.
