Pvt Leo T. Bernat graduated from Charlotte High School in 1937 and worked in an aircraft factory before he enlisted in Feabruary 1943. He was sent overseas in June 1944/He was reported wounded in action on 8 October 1944. In a letter written to his mother from the hospital, he said he had been wounded in the back by shrapnel. He returned to active duty on 21 November 1944.
