T/Sgt John Fisher employed at the time by the Mack Manufacturing Company before he enlisted on 28 January 1941. He was sent overseas on 7 November 1942 and first participated in the campaigns in north Africa and Sicily.

Sgt Fisher wrote his last letter to his wife on 17 September 1944 in which he said that he was in good health and he was then on German soil. The letter was received by Mrs. Fisher 9 October and in the interim, her husband was slain in battle. Sgt Fisher told his wife that he had been fed while in Germany by German people. He said he was well treated and the people that he had visited were anti-Nazi.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumoulsy. The citation cited: For gallantry in action and disregard for personal safety while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on 22 September 1944 during the operations in France. His actions reflect highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
