Pfc Ray C. Smith Jr. graduated from Newton High School.He enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 30 June 1941.
Pfc Smith was killed while carrying a wounded officer to safety in the midst of gunfire. The officer he rescued survived. For this action he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
