Benjamin Deal attended Collingswood High School.

He was ordered to lead a four-man patrol to make a reconnaissance of forward enemy positions. when the men approached the enemy lines, they were pinned down by concentrated mortar fire. Two of the men were killed instantly and only one managed to make it back to the American lines. The lone survivor, suffering from frozen feet after 36 hours away from his lines, reported Dyl was among those captured by the Germans.
