Sgt Frederick A. Cheesman was a clerk when he joined the New York National Guard in Buffalo, New York on 16 September 1940.

He was reported wounded in action on 14 October 1944 and was hospitalized for nine days. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
