2nd Lt Bernard E. Huddy enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 24 January 1941.

He attended high school for 3 years and worked in the production of industrial chemicals before he enlisted. He had been overseas since October 1942. For "achievement in action" while attached to the medical corps of a 1st Army infantry unit, he received a battle field commission in Germany, and promotion to the rank of second lieutenant. A veteran of Africa, Sicily and France, as well as Germany, he was wounded in France, June 1944 and received the Purple Heart.
