Pfc Stanley E. Kosak enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 17 March 1942. Formerly assigned to an anti-aircraft unit, Kosak received his military training at Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Adams in Massachusetts and Camp Stuart in Georgia.
