Pvt Fred Griego Jr. enlisted in Santa Fe, New Mexico on 2 December 1943.He attended the elementary school in Albuquerque for 8 years and high school for 3 years. He attended school at the time of his enlistment.
Pfc Griego was seriously wounded on 17 November when the patrol, of which he was part, was fired upon by an estimated 10 man enemy patrol with machine pistols.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for a daring action at St. Malo, France on 11 August 1944. He moved through a deadly hail of cross machine gun fire and flaming gasoline, when entrapped by the enemy.
