1st Lt Harry S. Mac Millan graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1938 where he was a member of the basketball team and manager of the football team. He then attended Drexel Institute where he was a member of the ROTC and was graduated in 1943. He played basketball and baseball for Drexel and in the county was active on two baseball teams, the Swartmore Hornets and Bortondale Colts. Following his graduation from college, he worked at Sun Shipp for a few weeks.

After being commissioned on 7 December 1943 he was was sent overseas on 9 May 1944.

He joined I Company from Regimental HQ on 16 July 1944, holding the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

On 7 August 1944 he was severely wounded at St. Malo and transferred to the 102nd Evacuation Hospital. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for the first time. After recovering he rejoined his unit on 24 August 1944.
