More information
Sgt Hawley was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on the day of his death. The citation reads: On 2 April 1945 in Germany, while leading a patrol against a farmhouse that contained some enemy troops, Sgt Hawley with complete disregard for his personal safety, stood in the open and attempted to negotiate their surrender. While thus exposed the enemy troops began to deploy and Sergeant Hawley unhesitatingly gave the order for his patrol to open fire. Throughout this action, he displayed outstanding initiative and coolness under fire until the enemy had been overcome. During this heroic act Sgt Hawley was killed by enemy artillery.Source of information: Peter Schouteten, Raf Dyckmans, Gary Bettcher, www.abmc.gov, www.wwiimemorial.com, www.findagrave.com, www.ancestry.com – 1930 Census, http://83rdinfdivdocs.org
