Pfc Carl E. Skans enlisted in Spokane, Washington on 16 August 1943.

On 14 July 1944 he was lightly wounded in action and transferred to the 34th Evacuation Hospital. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. After recovering he rejoined his unit on 14 August 1944.
