Pfc Aleksander Szmyd was born in Poland and had only been in the U.S.A. for twelve years. His parents, brothers and sister were still living in Poland, if they were yet alive.

He was a metal worker before he enlisted in Erie, Pennsylvania on 24 November 1942.
