Pfc John P. Day attended high school for three years and worked in a textile factory.He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 23 November 1942.
During the initial attack on Standdaarbuiten, Pfc Day who manned a BAR automatic rifle, was the only casualty of 2nd Platoon. He was in a field in his slit trench when a German soldier advanced and fired. Pfc Day was killed instantly by rifle fire at close distance.
