More information
Lunie F. Barr worked as a carpenter for a factory that made windows.Pvt Lunie F. Barr enlisted at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia on 4 April 1944.
When his brother Morris, who was serving with the Army Air Force, was missing in action, Lunie Barr enlisted. He departed for Europe when his oldest daughter was 5 years and the youngest was still a baby. He took care that his wife promised to tend the grave of his mother if he wouldn't return home. She died when he only was 4 years old.
On 9 November 1944 he arrived in England and one month later, on 7 December, he reported at his unit's "command post" in Lucherberg, Germany. At 2 o'clock in the morning the command post was hit by a 170mm grenade which severely wounded him in the head. He was treated with great care for 3 days but he died on 9 December 1944 in the 97th Evacuation Hospital at Brand near Aachen.
He was first buried at Henr-Chapelle on 10 December 1944 and disinterred on 28 October 1947. His remains were prepared and placed in a casket the same day and he was given his final resting place in May 1949.
