S/Sgt Raymond F. Puestow graduated from West Bend High School, where he was senior class president and star athlete. He attended Milwaukee State Teachers college.

He joined the US Army Reserve in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 16 September 1942.

S/Sgt Puestow was awarded the Silver Star for successful singlehanded attacking a machine gun nest.
