Pfc Lyman T. Latourette Jr. graduated from Washington High School in 1941 and attended Oregon State University.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Corvallis, Oregon on 9 December 1942. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied engineering at Princeton University. He was sent overseas in August 1944.
