Robert A. Bach attended Fairbury schools, graduating from the high school in 1932. He attended Bradley Tech in Peoria two years. He then attended Illinois Technical College in Chicago, and received a degree in building constructions and estimating.

With his father he owned J.N. Bach and Son.

He enlisted on 26 March 1941 and trained at Camp Croft, South Carolina, where he served until he was sent overseas in October 1944.

Robert Bach was married to Elizabeth Sue Lawing on 5 September 1942.
