1st Lt. Charles H. Bernard joined the army at the age of sixteen.

He was killed by a mine that went off while he was attempting to disarm it.

Two of his brothers also served, Cpl William Bernard, who also served in Europe and Gunner's Mate 3-C Samuel G. Bernard who served in the Pacific.
