Pfc James M. Murray Jr. immigrated to the U.S. in 1925. He attended junior college where he was an outstanding athlete. A trumpeter of marked ability he was also a member of the school band and orchestra and played in local dance bands.He enlisted at Fort MacArthur, California on 14 March 1942. He hoped to serve in an army band but was selected for the infantry instead.
