2nd Lt John L. Land graduated from Boys High School in 1937 and from the Univeristy of South Carolina in 1941. He attended Charleston Medical College for one year.He enlisted at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina on 13 July 1942 and was selected for the Officer Candidate School. He received his commission in May 1943. A short time later he was married to Miss Betty Nininger, after which he was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland for over a year. He was sent overseas in September 1944.
