S/Sgt Clyde O. attended collegeand was a clerk before he enlisted at Camp Chelby, Mississippi on 9 January 1942.

While over the North Sea on a practice mission, about 10 to 15 enemy fighters jumped the formation and left the plane badly shot up and #3 engine and part of the right wing burning fiercely. The pilot ordered the crew to bail out but he rode the aircraft to a crash landing in the sea.

Five crew members were killed, five were rescued.
