Sgt. Ralph Zarzecki attended South High School and was employed at the South Side works of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation before he enlisted on 12 February 1943 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The mission was to bomb the industrial area in the suburbs of Berlin. Instead, targets of opportunity were bombed in Oranienburg.

The aircraft was shot down by enemy fighters. Seven crew members were killed, three were taken prisoner.
