John Shields joined the National Guard in Tacoma, Washington on 16 September 1940.

The airplane was hit by flak that knocked out #4 engine. Two crewmembers were killed, seven were taken prisoner. The pilot, 1st Lt John Justice would evade capture and returned to the UK via Gibraltar.

Lt. Shields was wounded in the head by 20mm fire but did bail out. A notation on a German report in the MACR says his body was found about 100 meters from the crashpoint on 10 November.

The killed crew members were initially buried in Ede, The Netherlands.
