Edwin Gunderson attended Carlisle High School and State Teachers College, West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a 165-pound varsity tackle, was elected by teammates to captain the 1936 Carlisled High School Team.He was sent overseas in October 1943, first arriving in England. In November 1944 he was promoted from 1st lieutenant to Captain. At that time he had been in the Army three years and four months and had been in action in Germany.
