More information

"Statement from 1Lt Lynwood S. Wyman, Pilot of 44-6170"
I was unable to tell crew to bail out, as interphone and alarm-bell system were out of order due to battle damage. Told co-pilot and engineer to bail out and they both went forward to nose escape hatch. I remained at controls holding ship level for at least 1 minute. When I left controls the ship went into a spiral, I assume as No. 1 & 2 engines were out and props windmilling, and I was thrown back thru the bombbay. Moore, W.J. Jr (Navigator), Blough, N.M. (Ball Turret), Baird, C, Jr (Waist Gunner) were missing when we were taken prisoners.
The Nose Gunner (R. Sias) said the Navigator (Moore) did not appear to be wounded but was dazed and made no attempt to put his chute on, however the Navigator motioned for Sias to bail out. Sias saw the co-pilot bail out and followed him.
The Radio Operator (H. Doran) saw the fire in the wing and ran back through the waist and tried to open the escape door. Baird and Blough (both missing) were in the waist section and Doran said appeared to be not wounded. It was Baird who opened the door for Doran to bail out.
The Tail Gunner (B. Glendening) came forward to his escape hatch as soon as we were hit and saw Blough and Baird unwounded in the waist when he saw Doran come back and bail out he went out his own escape hatch.
I didn't see the ship blow up but it must have, for I saw a wing falling by itself.
If the missing members of my crew did get out of the ship alive it is highly possible they may have been killed on the way down. I could here the Germans shooting at us with rifles as we floated down in our parachutes.
The plane crashed near Berlin-Heiligensee, Germany
He was buried in the Berlin Tegal Cemetery.
