"Statement of Sgt Theodore H. Mertz"

At 16,000 ft Plane on our left wing caught fire through enemy gunfire. It swerved under our nose and exploded. The explosion completely tore our front section as far as the Pilots compartement off. It is then that both the Navigator and the Bombardier were killed instantly. Losing about 10,000 ft almost immediately we were forced to bail out.

The aircraft crashed near Wehrheim, Germany 8POW, 2 KIA.
