Pfc John B. Lowney attended St Mary's High School for two years and was a coffee clerk at the A. & P. market in his home town.

He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 27 October 1942 and trained at Fort Wood, Missouri. He was went overseas on 10 November 1943.

He was wounded by a sniper on his left arm on 25 August 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
