Pvt Thomas B. Hartis enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 9 March 1943.

He had been reported wounded in action twice. The first time was on 8 September 1944 in France and the second time on 24 January 1945 in Germany. For these wounds he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal two times.

He was killed by mortar fire at about 5:30 a.m., close to the Rhine River.
