1st Lt. Gregory Matthews joined the Regular Army in September 1937 at Fort Devens. He graduated from Fort Benning, Georgia as a 2nd lieutenant. He was sent overseas in October 1943 and landed in Normandy as part of a Ranger battalion.At the time of his death, his brother Joseph served with the Army in France and his brother John served with the Coast guard at Woods Hole.
