More information

Pfc Lawrence A. Kirsch graduated from Stayton high School.

He enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 24 June 1943.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For gallantry in action on 4 March 1945, in the vicinity of Cologne. When the enemy counter attacked, Kirsch completely disorganized their attack before he was killed by direct fire from the enemy tank. His extraordinary bravery and cool action were instrumental in repulsing the enemy counter attack and gave his platoon ample time to deploy and repulse another counter attack in which 200 Germans were capture.

The incident took place at Stommelm, 10 miles west of Cologne.
