Pfc Paul D. Bagby enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 13 October 1942. He was a chauffeur before he enlisted.He was sent overseas in September 1944. He was slightly wounded on 4 March in Germany for which he was awarded a first Purple Heart Medal.
Pfc Bagby was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy when on 17 April 1945 he threw himself over a wounded soldier in order to protect him from a German grenade, thereby saving the soldier's life but costing him his own life.
