Pfc Bernard J. De Cook was a machinist apprentice before he enlisted at Fort Dix, New Jersey on 23 May 1944. He was sent overseas in November 1944.

Pfc De Cook was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in connection with military operations in Germany on 14 December 1944.

His wife revealed that he often declared before he went overseas that he would never return. He was survived by his wife and three-year old son.
